EVENT OVERVIEW
The Ciclovia Style Street Liberation Revolution Continues!
On Sunday, September 16th, 2012, between 10am-4pm, Boulder will host its third year “Ciclovia” style event proudly hosted by Boulder Green Streets. This year we have many exciting activities we will feature and more consolidated zones.
This year we also hope offer more free and borrowable gear. Borrow a bike, frizbee, rollerblades, try a skateboard, or make your own invisible shoes for running. Try out weird contraptions that will stretch your multi-modal mind. See new solutions for carrying babies, groceries, or deliveries.
Boulder’s first year pilot event ran along east Pearl Street between 15th and Folsom and will featured over 50 free activities. The event drew some 10-15,000 visitors. There was great food, amazing “get active” and “get healthy” vendors, and incredible live music. Come be a part of Green Streets Revolution!
This event is part of a movement to liberate urban spaces from automobiles and to demonstrate that traffic is not inevitable and is not the only way to use our urban spaces. It also illustrates that when cars are eliminated, if only temporarily, streets and urban spaces can be put to new use.
Leading up to the primary Green Streets event on September 18th, there will be a series of smaller neighborhood BGS events which are tentatively scheduled monthly. We are calling these “NGS” events- Neighborhood green street events. At these events we hope to strengthen community by bringing neighbors out into their own streets to have fun together using small scale street liberations to create public space. Neighbors can choose their own activities but some suggestions have included pick up sports games, community food tables, NSA information and produce, street art and more.

HISTORY
The most famous Ciclovìa occurs in Bogata, Colombia, every Sunday, when 70 miles of major arterials are shut down and two million people take to the street to walk, ride bicycles and play. The dynamic of challenging the presumption that major streets exist only for cars is powerful, as people rethink the use of public spaces. Many activities take place along the route, including music, food, art, and gatherings. A number of US cities have adopted this concept, calling them Sunday Parkways, Summer Streets and various other names.
